Masterclass allows for students to perform in an informal, supportive environment and will include musical games and student performances. They are for students only (no audience). Masterclass schedule will be made available for registered students in the fall and spring. Fee for participation is the same as a 30-minute lesson fee, $20, and is simply added to your child's invoice for the month.

Studio Policies

TUITION & FEES

Lessons are $40 each hour for in-studio lessons and $56 each hour for lessons in  your home ($20/28 for half-hour lessons), and are paid monthly according to the number of lessons in the month. You will receive an invoice via email outlining the month’s lessons and balance due prior to the first lesson of the month. Tuition is due on or before the first lesson of each month. There will be a $10 late fee added to accounts not paid by the 15th of the month. Returned check fee is $25. Payment can be made by cash or check in person or can be paid online using PayPal with the given link on your monthly invoice. Checks should be made out to Susan Petcher.

Beginning September 9, 2018, there is a $35 non-refundable Fall Registration Fee for each student during the regular school year schedule. This Registration Fee will cover materials and supplies needed by the student during the year, including method books, printouts, folders, stickers, flash cards, and games. It will cover lesson method books, but sheet music or additional supplemental books will be invoiced for reimbursement. The Registration Fee also covers the two recitals put on during the school year, keeping our performances ticket-free. Families with multiple students in the studio will have a discounted Registration Fee for the additional students of $20 each.

Summer Lessons are scheduled on a case-by-case basis. Summer students will be responsible for the cost of books and materials purchased for use during lessons when the studio is in Summer Session. Every attempt will be made to minimize this need for students enrolled in lessons during the regular school year schedule.

Additional Fees: Optional Studio Festival Fees and Non-Competitive Evaluation Fees are not included in tuition. Exact entry fees will be announced closer to enrollment time for each of the optional activities. Tuition is for lessons taught in my home or traveling lessons within a 15 mile radius. An additional charge for travel may be determined by additional distance traveled.

LESSON PROCEDURES

Attendance

A specific time period has been reserved exclusively for your lesson. Please make sure you arrive on time with music, assignment book, and any other relevant materials. Students arriving late for their lessons will NOT be given extra lesson time to make up for their tardiness. Students who arrive on time, but do not start on time WILL be given extra time to make up for it. I try to be on schedule, but at times need a few extra minutes to fully address the needs of a student. If you are running late because of traffic or other circumstances, please give me a call and let me know.

Cancelled/Missed Lessons

Please do not attend your lesson if sick and contagious. Lessons cancelled or missed without notification by 10:00 am on the day of the lesson are forfeited and will not be made up. When proper notification is given, by phone or email, a make-up lesson may be arranged at a time convenient to both the student and teacher or a lesson credit will  be given to your account. In the event of sudden illness or emergency situation, please contact me to discuss possible make-up lessons.

Should the teacher need to cancel or reschedule a lesson, every effort will be made to notify you by 10:00 am on the day of the lesson. Make-up lessons will then be arranged or a lesson credit will be given to your account.

Frequent day-of cancellations are not fair to the studio and to students on the waitlist. If last-minute cancellations become a problem, we will discuss a lesson schedule that will better suit your needs and my availability.

Parent Visits During Lessons

With only 30-45 minutes per week with your child, distractions can be problematic during piano lessons. Parents are always welcome to sit in on lessons (in fact, it’s a great way to stay in the know about what your child is learning) as long as it is not distracting to the student. I have a bench in my entry hallway as well as a chair in the music studio for parents to wait. Thank you for respecting my family home and my children’s privacy by staying in the spaces reserved for the studio.

Recitals

There will be two recitals: one in December, and one at the end of the school year. Students will prepare for their recitals as a part of their lessons. There is no fee or ticket cost for family and friends to attend the end of year recital.

Masterclasses may be held several times during the year as permitted by our schedule. These group classes are optional but recommended. Masterclasses allow for students to play their pieces in an informal, supportive environment and will include musical games, theory lessons, and student performances. They are for students only (no audience). Masterclass schedule will be made available in the fall and spring. Fee for participation is the same as a 30-minute lesson fee, $20, and is simply added to your invoice for the month.

Summer Lessons

Summer lessons will be arranged on a case-by-case basis and are not a part of the school year enrollment. They will be paid monthly according to the hourly rate and student lesson length.

Practicing

Students must practice to make progress each week. Students should practice 5 days a week, for at least half of their lesson time. For example, a student who comes for a 1⁄2 hour lesson should practice 15 minutes, 5 days a week. Consistent lack of practicing is grounds for dismissal.

Books and Materials

Beginning September 9, 2018, there is a non-refundable Fall Registration Fee for each student during the regular school year schedule. This Registration Fee will cover materials and supplies needed by the student during the school year, including method books, printouts, folders, stickers, flash cards, and games. It will cover lesson method books, but sheet music or additional supplemental books will be invoiced for reimbursement.

Summer students will be responsible for the cost of books and materials purchased for use during lessons when the studio is in Summer Session. Every attempt will be made to minimize this need for students enrolled in lessons during the regular school year schedule.

Termination

If parents or students choose to discontinue lessons for any reason, they are expected to notify me at least 30 days in advance, or pay for one month’s tuition, so that I will have adequate time to find a replacement.

I reserve the right to terminate the lessons, with 30-days notice given, of anyone who does not abide by the policies outlined in the Studio Policy. I also reserve the right to terminate a student with no notice if any of these circumstances occur:

  • Constant disruptive or disrespectful behavior

  • Repeated failure to prepare assigned material

  • Equipment damage or theft

  • Continued failure to pay tuition on time
